i think the 'problem' here is the ny times is a local paper that is also eaten up by the rest of the country; it could be that is just story for the locals that happens to be on the web. i don't care; i don't read the paper.

i agree, though, about the qualities you mention, there were plenty of 'decent' shops in nyc ; none were remarkable. i never enjoyed going to them; i don't know if it was b/c the coffee sucked or it was for the same reasons i didn't like going anywhere there, excepting b-ville, r.i.p.

i don't want to hear your next remark!!

when we lived in nyc, 20 years ago, we hated going out for coffee. you had a choice between a national chain or getting pilon at a deli. even so, i believe porto rico is unfairly slighted in this article.

‘Over the last two years, more than 40 new cafes and coffee bars have joined a small, dedicated group of establishments where coffee making is treated like an art, or at least a high form of craft.
...
For years New Yorkers had to look to places like Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Portland, Ore., or Blue Bottle Coffee in San Francisco for this kind of quality. Now both companies have opened roasters and coffee bars in New York. Four Barrel Coffee of San Francisco will be roasting here soon.

more in the way of coffee-related crime.

Thief robs arcade with cup of coffee

Tue Feb 9, 11:32 am ET

BERLIN (Reuters) – A thief in the German town of Hamelin robbed an amusement arcade by threatening the attendant with a cup of coffee, authorities said on Tuesday.

"He wasn't going to pour coffee over her, he was going to hit her with the cup," a spokesman for local police said.

Brandishing the steaming cup he had just ordered, the thief forced the 26-year-old to open the till and fled with cash.

Police would not say how much money he had taken from the attendant, who had been alone in the arcade. "We don't want to encourage others to try this," the spokesman said.

If you're looking for a standout among blended coffees, you may be disappointed. Blends, the best-selling type of ground coffee, contain beans from at least two regions or countries. Of the 24 ground caffeinated blends we tested, none was excellent or very good. But a careful shopper can choose a good combination of taste and price.
-consumer reports

no shit; look at the brands they test. in a method that reminds me of saul cups's letter to the upenn editor, consumer reports may as well ask, 'what is the best cola on earth - to find out we sampled both coke and pepsi.'

there have been a lot of perplexing and fascinating tidbits emerging from the murder of four police officers at a forza coffee company shop south of tacoma (downwind from the aroma?) including the fact that mike huckabee let the cretin out onto the street when we was governor. i embarrassingly admit that i have continuously thought about what a horrifying tableau the events would have painted.

GUARAJUBA, Brazil (Reuters) – Brazil's coffee industry is engaged in a tireless battle against rogue roasters who cut corners and costs by bulking up their products with corn, soy or even wood, the ABIC industry association says.

The tainted products have not been known to cause health problems in the consumers who drink them, usually unknowingly, but the industry takes a hard line against the fraudulent practice to protect the beverage's image.

The joint initiative known as the Seal of Purity is run by the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (ABIC) and involves laboratory testing of coffee picked at random from supermarket shelves. The seal was launched 20 years ago.

"The most common thing is to find wood from the (coffee) tree and shells from the beans but you can also find corn or caramel, which is much cheaper than coffee," said Almir Jose da Silva, ABIC's chairman.

"where did my 'photos' button go?"

When adding a new tableaux ('post'), you may want to include images. We prefer to use 'photopress' to manage our images on cafetableaux, which should be accessible via a button labeled 'Photos' at the top of your post editing screen. If you are unable to see this button, you may need to enable the 'visual editor' for your profile.

You can enable the visual editor by clicking 'Your Profile' under the 'Users' button in the left column of your WordPress editing screen. This will take you to a screen where you can edit aspects of your profile such as your biography, password, website, etc. At the top of this screen, there should be a check box labeled: 'Disable the visual editor when writing'. UNCHECK this box and click 'Update Profile'.

Now go back to the post editor (where you were composing your tableau); you should be able to see a button for Photopress now. It looks like a little Polaroid of a city skyline under a full moon. Click this button and a window will open; this window will enable you to upload images and add them to the post you are editing.

i think that it called 'scaling'; it happens to the heating elements in auto drip and electric espresso machines. you can buy a cleaner for it, or you can try soaking it in vinegar.

does yours get an odd white efflorescence in the lower vessel, like moist white rust? it looks horribly toxic.

i was told recently that if you have a pot of coffee that has been getting cold all day, you can add a bit of salt and reheat it; supposedly it is more tolerable.

i've never had a pot of coffee sitting around, so i don't know the value of this technique.

maybe they were using an aluminum percolator; do not aluminum utensils and cookware cause alzheimer's disease? is that the same thing as dementia? probably nobody knows.

also, my grandmother also used a percolator for years, what an awful era to live through.

I don't know, my grandparents had a percolator on the stove at all times and both suffered from dementia before dying. Maybe it had to do with the fact that they would only drink it if it was 211 degrees.

"After controlling for numerous socioeconomic and health factors, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure, the scientists found that the subjects who had reported drinking three to five cups of coffee daily were 65 percent less likely to have developed dementia, compared with those who drank two cups or less. People who drank more than five cups a day also were at reduced risk of dementia, the researchers said, but there were not enough people in this group to draw statistically significant conclusions."
