no one seemed to enjoy the article about coffee inducing miscarriages, so here is an article that states that coffee won't kill you:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Long-term coffee drinking does not appear to increase a person's risk of early death and may cut a person's chances of dying from heart disease, according to a study published on Monday.

Previous studies have given a mixed picture of health effects from coffee, finding a variety of benefits and some drawbacks from the popular drink. The new study looked at people who drank caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee.

and that 'a starbucks' is a noun that describes a coffee-based beverage

when i had the misfortune to work in an office in new york city, home of gorilla coffee and grounded, i would carry my own coffee in a steel cup; one morning a guy in the elevator pointed at it and said 'here's a smart one...brings his own starbucks', as though, not only is every coffee 'a starbucks', but carrying a beverage from home was such an earth-shatteringly nouveau concept.

if i am bringing it from home, then it inherently is not starbucks!

this guy also referred to me as 'the irish'

a jittery joes opened down the street from my office in december. it was located in the enormous new georgia state student dorm monstrosity. according to gsu's website it houses 2000 students. it has really changed this area a great deal. what i found interesting is that the place was almost always empty. my ladyfriend is a counselor at the gsu counseling center and she has to ask the students whether they drink coffee (along with a list of other drugs). most of them say no apparently. there is never any shortage of students loitering around the starbucks at equitable plaza however. i find it an interesting phenomenon that there is a generation of youths who are being reared to believe that coffee is different from starbucks, and that 'a starbucks' is a noun that describes a coffee-based beverage that only comes from that particular store. "no, i dont drink coffee! i drink starbucks." nevertheless, jj's is already out of business in that location, with 2000 19-year-olds sitting on their roof, after 2.5 months.

when i worked as a barista, a particular pregnant woman would come to the shop and order 'regular' coffee almost daily. i would give her decaf, and lie to her about it.

after relating this story on multiple occasions over the subsequent years, i have been advised that i was violating this woman's 'rights', somewhere along the lines of those anti-choice pharmacists who refuse to fill out prescriptions for birth control pills because it conflicts with their religious beliefs.

i did not 'believe' that caffeine was bad for a fetus. however, i guess i did 'believe' that the mother would have chosen the decaf if she had been better informed. that was presumptuous of me! in the future i will just lecture preggers until they ask for the manager or get their own coffee at wawa.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day have twice the risk of having a miscarriage as those who avoid caffeine, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

They said the study provides strong evidence that high doses of caffeine during pregnancy -- 200 milligrams or more per day or the equivalent of two cups of coffee -- significantly increase the risk of miscarriage.

And they said the research may finally put to rest conflicting reports about the link between caffeine consumption and miscarriage.

i guess i found it interesting that our tanking economy might force people to give up their 'specialty' drink, mainly because i believe that anyone who is ahead of me in line and orders a latte or a mocha frapp is a douchebag.

i didn't think starbucks had a problem getting people in the door; i wasn't aware that most people cared about their environment or their interaction w/ other folks (baristas). i wish i had a nickel for every time a satellite employee acted like a jackass; still, i return!

similar to your post on 'the planet', it is relatively uninteresting to see two faceless juggernauts duke it out over 'market share.' read 'in the hills the cities' instead.

also, it may be time that the prey are becoming the predator. when i was home in indialantic i saw that a new shop, 'java surf' has moved into the same building as the starbucks by the beach. apparently they are doing pretty well. i also heard that the proprietrix serves beverages in a negligee. maybe starbucks needs new uniforms. or maybe they shouldnt have wasted their money putting out that pmccartney cd. everyone knows he is the lamest beatle.

if you've listened to financial news radio at all this week, you've probably heard that the CEO of starbucks was ousted as its stock was falling. i don't know who gives a shit about things like that, but what might be interesting to cafe tableauxists is that $5 coffee drinks are becoming a luxury as the US economy sinks into recession, and that starbucks is realizing that the process of getting a drink at one of their 14 million stores is dehumanizing.

i've never been in a starbucks, but i imagine that ordering is something akin to picking tostadas from a touch screen at taco bell, which i have not done since 1994 or so!

if you search any of your favourite news sites, you can find plenty about the corporate shake up, but here is one for you:

Starbucks wakes up and smells the coffee
After 15 years of dizzying expansion, the coffee giant founded by Howard Schultz finally appears to have run out of froth. Andrew Gumbel reports from Los Angeles
Published: 10 January 2008

A decade ago, the man who brought Starbucks to the world was routinely appalled when people compared his speciality coffee chain to McDonald's. Howard Schultz always thought he was classier than that. These days, though, he is not messing about.

On Monday, just hours after a news report announcing McDonald's intention to sell high-grade espresso drinks in 14,000 of its outlets, Mr Schultz fired his chief executive.

It's been a lousy year all round for the Seattle-based coffee giant, with the number of store transactions down in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2007 for the first time in the company's history and the share price taking a pounding, down almost 50 per cent in value over the past 12 months. The competitive threat from the world's largest burger merchant was merely the last straw.

The attack at a S. Phila. Starbucks left a man in critical condition. Another was held for questioning.

By Michael Matza

Inquirer Staff Writer

A glint of violence more common around stop-and-gos in the city's rough neighborhoods struck a busy Starbucks in South Philadelphia, where on Saturday, for no apparent reason, a man repeatedly stabbed a patron waiting for his order, including once in the face.

Police said the 5:44 p.m. assault, which left the 29-year-old victim in critical condition yesterday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, remained under investigation. It was unclear whether the attack stemmed from an argument or was just an outburst by a deranged person.

Based on eyewitness accounts, however, police arrested a suspect around 8 a.m. yesterday at the same Starbucks, at 2201 S. Broad St., between Jackson and Wolf Streets.

Detectives said the man, a Philadelphia resident, was "known to police" from previous contact with law enforcement but declined to elaborate. The man was being questioned last night.

Although the coffeehouse is adjacent to the Methodist Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the victim was rushed to HUP's trauma unit in West Philadelphia "because of the seriousness of his injuries," said Lt. David Bellamy of the South Detectives Bureau, which is investigating.

A manager at the shop referred questions to Starbucks' corporate headquarters in Seattle, which was closed for the weekend.

Although the violence seemed out of place amid the aroma of ground cinnamon and baristas serving premium blends, it was not a total surprise for the neighborhood, said Lt. John Newman, a Jefferson Hospital security guard, who noted that the bank that shares the parking lot with Starbucks had been the target of frequent robbery attempts.

I can't say that I agree with trademarks in particular, and I don't appreciate the cost of my favourite varietal being increased - but I appreciate that Ethopia is going to earn more scratch and that other coffee drinkers might realize that there is more in heaven and earth than Columbian and Brazilian.

In trademarking its coffee, Ethiopia seeks fair trade

Connoisseurs worldwide savor the beans from Yirgacheffe for their distinctive flavor. And at a time when more consumers are targeting specialty brews, Ethiopia is poised to reap the rewards of a product that commands $10 per pound in the United States.

i'm not sure where i picked up this contraption; it was probably a 'free gift' from my credit union. it has a plastic cup for holding ground coffee; that cup fits into another cup with a mesh bottom. you place this on top of the stainless steel up and pour in your hot water. when using both of the filter cups it takes a long while for the water to drip into the bottom up, but the advantage in using two filter cups seems to be that you don't have much difficulty cleaning the mesh.

now that i can boil water for the 'french press' as i need it, i don't have much use for it, but when i was an indentured office servant, i was lucky to have this guy and a couple of soy yogurt cups of coffee grounds next to my cpu. four or five times a day, i could assemble this machine, add some tablespoons of coffee and fill it from the office's bunn's spigot.

i keep it primed and ready for the day i am forced back into service.

this is it, the bottom of the bottom, the indentured life that i have chosen and the lot that accompanies it. i have been drinking autodrip starbucks coffee out of this machine for the last 6 years, same machine, same carafes. at a few points in the history of this apparatus we the people have attempted to rise up and demand a more humane source for our beverages, be it aurora or beans brought in weekly by different office members. the one time that the coffee supplier was approached by helen han to bring nicer coffee we were switched from the standard starbucks brew to something called 'verona.' romeo and carlo scarpa would be shitting in their castelvecchii if they had to drink this garbage. there have been employees who have admirably brought in their own thermos of blackwater daily and i have intermittently attempted to get into the habit but i can hardly remember to brush my teeth or pay my bills, much less carry a steel beaker of coffee back and forth every day. i have resigned myself to cutting this swill with half a mug of westsoy and choking it down in between cups of mint tea.

it does not get any better; the only truly enjoyable brew hails from this french press. though i have been through 3 or 4 'carafes' or whatver the glass part is called, the copper superstructure of this press has been in my service since late 1996, brewing cups in georgia, ohio, colorado, california, new york, pennsylvania, new mexico, and more...

"i can't imagine what kind of emergency would necessitate its use. to use it you still need paper filters, access to hot water, and, of course, coffee; why wouldn't you just have a 'coffee maker' there as well?"

The manual drip brewing method produces a superior cup of coffee, as long as you're using a gold cone filter, the proper amount of coffee (about 32g for a 12-oz. cup), which is ground fresh and ground properly, the correct temperature water, and NO PAPER FILTERS!! This is how we brew every cup of coffee in my coffee shop, and believe me, my customers have noticed the difference and appreciate it very much. They are spoiled now and many refuse to go to other coffee shops where they'd have to drink coffee that's been sitting in an airpot for 30-40 minutes (or more!) and is lacking in all of the wonderful oils that contribute to a truly delicious cup of coffee.

i used to have contempt for autodrip machines at home, but i was seduced by the fact that this thing drips coffee directly into a stainless steel carafe that keeps coffee warm for hours without cooking it on a burner. it employs a reusable #4 'gold' filter, and coffee dribbles down the side of the carafe every time i pour.

LoL ok .. well the reason I want to talk about is because it was interesting to see how most of the people at the CoffeeFest Atlanta, weren’t from Atlanta.

I mean there were maybe 2 or 3 Atlanta coffeeshops representing there.
Which to my understanding was Octane, Aurora, and I think one who’s name was along the lines of the “The Perk”

The coffee culture is really big in other parts of the country and taken seriously. Being a barista is often considered a career choice in these places, and not just an after-school job.

Alot of coffeehouses in Atl don’t seem to really have the culture down like these other places do . (i.e. Stumptown in Portland, Alterra in Milwaukee etc. )

As a consumer and connoisseur , what is perfect coffeeshop experience for you ?

Ok this is not exactly a cafe review. (Tableaux Big Dogs: please refrain from “doing a drive-by” past my place! lol)

This is more of a forum post.
I was wondering if anyone attended the CoffeeFest that was here this past weekend?
I had the best coffee I’ve had in a long time there and would like to discuss coffee culture in Atlanta.

cafetiere

i picked this guy up in the barbes neighborhood of paris. it was the cheapest thing i could find at six euros - much more than it is worth, yet only a fraction of the price of decent models. i planned on leaving it when i returned to the states, but it's ease of use grew on me. apart from some candy, it was the only souvenir i had to bring home.
